Drive monitoring brings several kinds of evidence together. Temperature and reported status provide an overview, SMART attributes expose information reported by the drive, and a surface scan checks for readable or problematic areas. Looking at these results can help investigate a suspected storage problem and decide when data should be moved to safer storage. Saving a report also preserves information that can be compared with a later check. Health reports are diagnostic evidence, not a promise that the drive will continue working. Some connections expose less information than others, and a normal result does not replace a backup. If data is important and a drive is behaving abnormally, avoid unnecessary writes.
