Overview
An ESXi-based virtualization foundation for eligible desktop-delivery workloads. VMware vSphere 6 Standard for Desktop is intended for the virtualization layer of a virtual-desktop infrastructure deployment. ESXi hosts provide resources for desktop virtual machines and the associated desktop-delivery environment rather than unrestricted general server workloads. Administrators prepare compatible hosts and configure the desktop virtual machines with appropriate CPU, memory, networking and storage. A separate desktop-delivery solution manages the user-access workflow. Planning should consider how users connect and which supporting services belong to the permitted desktop environment, rather than treating the hosts as an unrestricted datacenter pool. The vendor Desktop licensing family restricts use to virtual desktops, permitted session-based desktop or application delivery and associated management or monitoring tools. It should not be selected as a general-purpose server-consolidation license. Desktop identifies the intended infrastructure workload, not a local Windows desktop application such as Workstation. It does not automatically include Horizon, a connection broker, guest operating-system licenses or every supporting component.
