Overview
Run server VMs on licensed ESXi hosts and move a running VM’s disks between datastores with Storage vMotion, using compatible vCenter management. VMware vSphere 8.0 Standard is a server virtualization edition for ESXi hosts running multiple guest workloads. Administrators can create VMs, allocate resources to them, and manage compatible hosts through vCenter Server. It is suitable when the environment needs more than basic small-office consolidation and has to plan storage or host maintenance around active services. A useful Standard-edition distinction is Storage vMotion. With the right vCenter and storage configuration, an administrator can move a running VM's disk files between datastores for planned storage work without first shutting down the guest. The capability does not remove the need to assess datastore capacity, performance, and network paths before migration. Deploy this edition on supported server hardware and verify interoperability between the ESXi release and the vCenter release that will manage it. vCenter Server, guest operating systems and vSAN storage are licensed separately from the host. Choose the edition by the functions needed in the finished environment.
